From Junior Organiser Mike Hooper

England Golf selected The Somerset Golf Union to pilot a project to encourage more juniors to get involved with golf. The first event took place on 31st January with 60+ members of various golf clubs from the county with 23 different clubs present on the night.

We had a presentations from Emily ( England golf Ambassador) and also young peoples manager Lee Dolby, Martin Higgs England golf clubs representative.

England golf and the SGU selected 2 clubs to present on the night as case studies for the work they do as Junior sections, T&P Junior section were chosen as one of those and were asked to outline with regards to The Saturday Academy groups through to the Weekly Monday night sessions and the support needed to run all of those. And also the impact that social media is having and the work required to look after the dedicated Junior Website, Facebook Page and Twitter account.

The junior section were very proud to have been selected and felt it was an endorsement of the work and dedication being carried out by the current Junior section and Academy teams and also reflected all of the progress made in previous years to support Junior golfers at T&P from the members and the Golf club.

Thanks also to Mark Langford for all of his support and for coming along on the night and also to Bailey Langford our 2018 Junior Captain being their to represent the Juniors on the night.

The pilot project continues and the next meeting will be on March 7th 2018.

Ali Williams, who recently joined the team at Taunton & Pickeridge Golf Club, is the new Junior Academy Golf Coach. Ali came through the junior section and played alongside very good young golfers who later became England players and Assistant Professionals at other clubs.

Ali is 27 and  married to Rosie who he met at T&P when he was 18. Rosie was a waitress there and also a former junior member. Her mum Jill Steels, still works at T&P.

Following three successful years as Tiverton’s Assistant Professional to former T&P Assistant Alistair Welsher, and recently returned to Taunton. On Saturdays, two coaching sessions take place at the golf club. Ali is really looking forward to supporting the 40+ young golfers who regularly attend.

Ali will have great support from willing volunteers including Past Ladies’ Captain Jacky Ford, Somerset Ladies Golfer Helen Hayward, and Val Hayward who has been a major supporter of junior golf for many years. The older golfers from the junior section often come along to support the sessions. Many of them are Somerset golfers with single figure handicaps and this allows the Academy players to look at them and aspire to be the best they can and also for the older players to get involved and continue to build the team spirit within the juniors at the club.

Ali commented, ”It is so important to have fun, in a safe environment. Golf can boost a child’s health and confidence as well as teaching them personal skills that will last a lifetime. Our juniors are the future of our golf club and I’m very excited to have the opportunity to help them develop as golfers of the future.”

Mike Hooper the Junior Organiser commented, ”Ali is such a positive young man and will prove to be a fantastic coach.

Ali has replaced Assistant Professional Chris Wyatt who left just before Christmas. The junior section noted that, during his time at the club, Chris made big improvements in not only the Junior Congu golfers but all of the Academy golfers. The section is looking forward to Ali building on the foundations laid and to further develop the Academy golfers.

Should you wish to get involved in the sessions, please call Ali or Simon Stevenson, Director of Golf at T&P, on 01823 421790.
